At first, you don’t notice it…

All is normal.

And then, snap! Your beloved riempie chair rips a tendon.

That is the nature of riempies, whether white, tanned or raw – at some point they reach EOL (End of life).

If you think back, you may realise you did notice the firm, comfortable seat beginning to sit a bit lower. Maybe you felt the sharp edge of the frame that wasn’t there before. A closer inspection can show the narrowing of the riempie where it comes through the hole in the frame.

Yes, all of there are tell tale signs. Warning signs. Years of the South African sun that may fall on your chair, humidity that comes and goes, spills on the riempies just “washed off” (btw, BIG no!) – dries out the riempies until SNAP! And you don’t sit on a seat; you’re stuck in a hole…

And now, that beloved chair ending up in a store room because it is embarrassing, or well, just useless? It may be an inherited piece where your grandmother used to bring you mother to rest on as a baby, or an investment like a James Mudge designer riempie chair.

Riempies (white, raw, tanned) are natural leather. They stretch. They drie out. They get brittle. And eventually they just get, well, broken!

It can be repaired.

If it is normal white riempies on imbuia and yellow-wood, or the black riempies on an investment like a James Mudge chair, Rattan and riempie is here to save your day, I get my supplies from the same supplier James Mudge gets his black riempies from. And I restore your investment so it can take up its rightful place again. White alum riempies, tanned riempies (black, chocolate, teak, natural), raw cattle-hide riempies, kudu riempies for your old Sandveld bench – I can help you.

I am in Kempton Park, 101 Silverleaf ave, but please make an appointment first. I don’t carry a lot of stock, but in most cases, stock can be here in a day or 3. Kudu riempies are dried and cut on order, so it takes a bit longer.

I also replace cane webbing, and restore cane/rattan furniture.
