Care & Maintenance: Heritage Furniture

1. Raw & Kudu Riempies (The “Sandveld” Standard)

Rawhide is an organic, “living” material. It needs to retain its natural oils to stay strong.

• Avoid Direct Sunlight: UV rays are the enemy of rawhide. It will shrink, become brittle, and eventually snap.

• Feeding the Hide: Once a year, apply a very light coating of Castor Oil or a specialized hide food. Do not over-saturate, as this can cause the riempies to stretch excessively.

• Cleaning: Use only a slightly damp (not wet) cloth to wipe away dust. Never use household detergents.

2. Traditional White Riempies

This is processed leather and should never be treated with leather oils/creams. It will become dry and brittle and break.

• Moisture Control: Never leave white riempies in a damp environment, as they can develop mold and lose their tension.

• Stain Prevention: If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a dry cloth but do not rub.

• Tension: If the seat begins to sag, do not attempt to tighten it yourself. Contact Rattan and Riempie for advice.

3. Cane Webbing (Rattan)

Cane is a plant-based fiber that requires “flexibility” to survive the South African climate.

• Hydration is Key: Mist the underside of the webbing very lightly with water once every few months to maintain flexibility. Once dry, you can add some clear furniture oil to the top.

• Avoid “Point Pressure”: Never stand on a cane seat. The weight must be distributed evenly.

• The “Stoep” Warning: Even on a covered veranda, humidity changes can cause cane to expand and contract. Protect these pieces against extreme temperature/humidity variations.

4. Wood Care

• Cleaning: Dust with a soft microfiber cloth.

• Waxing: Every 6–12 months, apply a high-quality Beeswax or Carnauba wax. Apply in the direction of the grain, let it sit for 20 minutes, and buff with a clean cloth.

• No “Spray” Polishes: Avoid commercial aerosol polishes containing silicone, as they create a build-up that suffocates the wood’s natural patina.
