If you love old furniture, you can loose yourself in an auction house. The smell of old furniture, the “feel” of the wood, the nostalgia, wondering what the history of every piece is… This is the addiction.
And then, sometimes so cheap! You just have to get that bargain. Temptation!
Then the sobering up. Back at home, you quickly want to get a price on the bit of repairs on the rattan seat. And then you realise why the owner got rid of the piece. The repair cost is much more than you anticipated, especially if you bought a bargain with handwoven rattan on it. Handwoven rattan is expensive and for 3 reasons
- The weaving material is expensive. VERY expensive!
- Labor – a standard seat takes takes about 20 to 40 hours to weave.
- Very few people left who can do this.
So, before you buy that bargain, find out what the repairs will cost you. The bargain may not be a bargain anymore. If you are willing to spend the money on repairs, I can get that piece as new as an antique can be. But it comes at a price.
Riempie furniture is relatively cheap to repair. Furniture with pressed/machine rattan too. But be aware of the cost of handwoven rattan – that one can really sting!
Take care, happy bargain hunting and may 2021 only bring good things to your door!
